In a significant announcement on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, the Government unveiled its intention to implement changes in planning application fees. The plan outlines a 35% increase in fees for major planning applications, set to take effect from Monday, April 1, 2024. Additionally, fees for all other applications will experience a 25% increase.
Looking ahead, these application fees will witness an annual adjustment each April, commencing from April 1, 2024. This adjustment will be based on the Consumer Prices Index from the preceding September, with an annual fee increase limit set at 10%. A comprehensive fee review is also on the horizon, scheduled to occur within the next three years.
Notably, the amendments include the elimination of the option for applicants to submit a repeat planning application without incurring charges if the initial submission is withdrawn or rejected.
Considering this development, if you have development proposals in the pipeline and are seeking planning approval, it might be prudent to expedite the submission of your planning application. This strategy aims to circumvent the possibility of being subject to the impending fee hikes.
While the implementation date of April 2024 might appear distant, it's worth considering the implications, particularly for larger projects. Even smaller endeavours could benefit from taking proactive steps now, accounting for potential delays in securing pre-application advice. These delays have become a prevalent challenge across various local planning authorities (LPAs).
